Murcia Region in Spain

Murcia in Spain is a region located between the region of Andalucia in the south and the Valencian Community to the northeast. The province of Murcia in Spain was home of the important ancient Carthaginian and Roman settlements. During the middle ages the province of Murcia was under Moorish occupancy.

Brief Description of the Region of Murcia in Spain

The capital of the province of Murcia is also called Murcia. The capitol of Murcia is situated inland in the province. Distance to Alicante 85 kilometres and to Granada 258 kilometres. The capital of Murcia counts around 400.000 inhabitants.

Cartagena is another important city in the Murcia region. Cartagena is also the most important port in Murcia. Founded by the Carthaginians in 221 BC Cartagena has maintained its importance as the major port of the region.

The region of Murcia is also home of the tourist resorts on the Costa Calida. The Mar Menor and La Manga resorts are famous for their long sandy beaches and warm waters perfect for watersports.

The inland of the Murcia region is in part almost a desert and in other parts perfect for the growth of fruits and vegetables from which Murcia is famous.
